B.C. shows leadership on softwood

April 12, 2002

Ottawa: April 19th MP Betty Hinton (Kamloops, Thompson and Highland Valleys) will join five other MPs and Senators traveling to France for the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly committee on economic affairs and development.

"With Canadian forest management up for discussion with highly placed representatives of European countries I wanted to be there," said Mrs. Hinton.

The Canadian delegation, representing all political parties, will hear from individuals such as His Royal Highness, the Grand Duke Henry of Luxembourg; Mr. Jakob Kellenberger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross; and Mrs. Carla del Ponte, Prosecutor to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia during the week-long meetings.

Topics on the agenda include: the New Economy and Europe; honouring of obligations and commitments by the Russian Federation; observations of elections in Ukraine. There will be an afternoon of discussion regarding forest management in Canada and future co-operation with Europe. Leading the discussion will be Mr. Guillermo Martinez-Casan of Spain.

Mrs Hinton said the countries who will be at the table in France are potential customers for the products produced by forestry companies in her riding.

"Being able to bring information directly from the region and place it in the hands of people who make decisions is a huge opportunity," she said.

This weekend at the Interior Logging Association convention Mrs. Hinton will talk with people directly involved with the forestry sector to ensure she has the most up-to-date data about what is going on in the industry at this time.

"I want to take information on the primary forest sector. I'll also take information on the value-added products focus that is currently being launched in the region," she added.
