EDC’s EYE on Youth
Expanding Canada’s exports and investments is paramount to Canada’s future. Through its Education and Youth Employment (EYE) Strategy, Export Development Canada (EDC) helps youth across the country to become more aware of the importance of international trade to achieving and sustaining Canadian prosperity.
The EYE Strategy also builds employment and learning opportunities for young Canadians, by encouraging research and studies in international business and by offering relevant work experience for youth.
Educational scholarships and more
Since its creation in 1999, the EYE Strategy has reached over 20,000 youth across Canada through its educational programs and affiliations with various youth organizations. Some achievements to date are:
- 60 EDC International Studies Scholarships awarded to students attending EDC’s 18 partner universities; for information on who is eligible, when and how to apply visit www.edc.ca/corpinfo/careers/eye/eye_e.htm
- Over 150 work placements for students throughout the year at EDC.
- Dialogue with youth on trade-related issues through the Go Global: Youth Trade Challenge. This contest asked Canadian youth to share their ideas in an essay entitled, “You can improve global trade. Tell us how.”
- Continued successful partnerships with youth organizations, Global Vision and AIESEC, that provide international experiences and education to over 5,000 youth per year.
EDC increases awareness of international trade by sharing its expertise with 18 partner universities, while gaining valuable intelligence from students and faculty. EDC also supports the development of university teaching materials, namely case studies.
EDC offers an International Studies Scholarship to one undergraduate business or economics student at each of its partner universities. In addition, two national scholarships are offered at the MBA level. These scholarships include the opportunity for a four-month remunerated work term at EDC, enabling the winners to gain relevant work experience. Through event sponsorships and related speaking opportunities, EDC is in direct contact with the students and youth of today. EDC supports numerous events and activities with an educational and international business focus, such as international exchanges, Junior Team Canada Missions, youth workshops and conferences.
